Karin Kim har en el-baggrund samt en branduddannelse og har tidligere været ansat i Sikkerhedsstyrelsen. Siden 2007 har Karin Kim været en del af standardiseringsudvalget S-531 (ATEX), været aktiv i oversættelserne af DS/EN 60079-14 (2014), DS/EN 60079-10-1 (2016) og DS/EN 60079-29 (2016). Karin Kim har også arbejdet inden for træindustrien, hvor hun har været rådgiver og designer indenfor bl.a. gnistslukningssystemer. Desuden har Karin Kim arbejdet i medicinalindustrien som rådgiver, herunder udarbejdet ATEX-strategi, myndighedsbehandlet brandtekniske redegørelser, risikovurderinger og Hazop samt CE-mærkning. Karin Kim er ExVeritas certificeret i udførelse af indledende inspektioner både indenfor væske, gas og støv.
